Transport of human remains

To transfer human remains from abroad to Serbia, it is necessary to obtain the appropriate document of the Republic of Serbia – a Funeral Permit (Sprovodnica).

The application for the issuance of a Funeral Permit is submitted to the diplomatic-consular mission.

The application may be submitted by a relative of the deceased or by a funeral company authorized by them.

To obtain a Funeral Permit, the following original documents must be submitted:

  1. Death certificate issued by the competent Finnish authorities

  2. Medical report on the cause of death

  3. Request by the relatives or the authorized funeral company for the transportation of human remains, stating, among other details, the place of burial and the means of transportation

  4. Passport of the deceased

  5. Funeral permit or authorization for the transfer of remains abroad issued by the competent authority of the receiving country

  6. If the person died of plague or smallpox, the Funeral Permit is issued only upon obtaining the consent of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia. This consent is obtained through the diplomatic-consular mission of the Republic of Serbia

  7. Confirmation of a secured burial site in the Republic of Serbia, if the deceased was a foreign national

  8. Cremation certificate (if transporting an urn)

  9. Consular fee in the amount of 4 euros

If the deceased is to be buried in a third country, but transportation of the remains is carried out through the territory of Serbia, it is necessary to obtain a Transit Funeral Permit from the Republic of Serbia. For the issuance of a Transit Funeral Permit, all the above-listed documents are required, as well as the Funeral Permit of the country where the burial will take place.

For the transfer of an urn to Serbia, it is also necessary to obtain a Funeral Permit. All the above-mentioned documents must be submitted, along with the cremation certificate.
